What Lagos Governor’s SSA says is the solution to perennial traffic jams in Lagos

To many residents, Lagos traffic is a quagmire that has defied every proffered solution but a social media aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu may have just found the silver bullet.

Following torrential rainfall that left many parts of the state flooded, with a negative impact on vehicular traffic, popular actress and filmmaker, Rahama Sadau posed an all-too-familiar question.

Taking to X, the controversial Sadau asked, “What is the solution to Lagos traffic pls?” and added a crying emoji.

Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor of Lagos, Jubril Gawat curtly replied, “Development of other states”.

The brief exchange elicited diverse reactions from many netizens.

@olamijuwon1007 wrote, “Lagos is overpopulated and overstretched as it stands.”

@Besttemperature wrote, “The reason Lagos is Lagos is because of the seaport. Yeah, development of other seaports in other states, proper railway infrastructure, and links will see Lagos decongested.”

Olushola Apena said, “That is why states like Ogun state needs to step up infrastructure development for people to live in Ogun and work in Lagos or companies who need Industrial expansion can take their expansion to Ogun (and) grow the economy of the state. The two states will benefits pari passu.”

With the smallest land mass of Nigeria’s 36 states, Lagos is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with estimates ranging from 16,637 to 21,000 people per square kilometre.

This high density is due to the state’s status as a major economic hub and port city, attracting people from all over Nigeria and beyond.
