Tragedy struck at a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State on Sunday as a Prophet of the church identified as Yomi Adetula was shot dead by gunmen who also went ahead to use an axe to mangle his head during service.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, who were three in number stormed the CCC Eagle Parish along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko, around 10:30am and immediately shot the 54-year-old Prophet Adetula, who obviously was their target.
They then proceeded to use axe to mangle his head to ensure that he was dead before they stormed out of the church.
Ogun Police Command confirmed the tragic event in a statement on Sunday through a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Omotola Odutola.
Odutola in the statement said the police has already launch a manhunt for the gunmen while investigation into the dastardly act has begun.
According to her, the gunmen fled to the border area of the state after committing the murder.
“Police officers raced to the scene and saw on Yomi Adetula, ‘M’, aged 54 years lifeless in the pool of blood which stained his white celestial garment lying face up.
“On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets and his head was not spared. To ensure the victim was really dead, it was mangled with axe.
“On police inquiry, information further gathered that three men came into the church, brought out long double barrel gun aimed at their target and fire a shot that brought the deceased down,” she said.
She added that the remains of the prophet had been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ilaro.
“Normalcy has been restored while possible clue will be revealed in the coming days as investigation has been launched into the very sad occurrence,” Odutola concluded in the statement.
