Nigerians living in the United States have unveiled an “Aso Ebi” for the January 20 inauguration of Joe Biden and Harris Kamala as President and Vice President of the United States.
“Aso Ebi” is a uniform dress that is traditionally worn predominantly among the Yoruba of southwest Nigeria during social engagements. The cloth is often made from different attires such as Ankara, Lace, Guinea among others.
This is not the first time Nigerians will be celebrating with Americans in such a uniquely Nigerian style, as many Nigerians in the US also unveiled “Aso-Ebi” attire to celebrate the inauguration of former President Barack Obama, America’s 44th President who was also the country’s first black President.
Joe Biden’s victory during the recent US presidential polls on November 3 was certified by Congress on January 6th, after a group of supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump swarmed the US Capitol partly to protest Biden’s victory in the polls which the outgoing president alleged was rigged.
In the aftermath of the January 6th incident at the US Congress, outgoing President Donald Trump subsequently promised an orderly transfer of power but has still steadfastly refused to concede defeat and congratulate President-elect Joe Biden, despite losing several cases instituted in the US courts seeking to invalidate Biden’s electoral victory.
As Americans prepare for the onset of a new era of governance under the Biden-Kamala administration, amidst rising COVID-19 cases and numerous economic challenges, analysts say the incoming administration will need to deal with a divided country.
