The Edo State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the arrest of one Kelvin Izekor over the murder of his wife, Success Izekor, aged 38, on Saturday.
In a viral video, police and residents of the area were seen taking the deceased who had matchet wounds on the head from her apartment into the police Hilux truck.
The couple were said to be newly married, and residents were at a loss as to what could have happened between them that led to the killing of Success.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity said what happened was unexpected and that the two just got married. She stated that it was unbelievable to see that the deceased had to suffer such a fate.
The resident said, “I can’t believe what I saw. Imagine being killed by your husband. They are a new couple, and nobody would have expected the woman to suffer that fate.”
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, said the husband was about to be lynched by a mob before the police arrived, pacified them and arrested the suspect.
Yamu said, “On Saturday 22, 2025, at about 10 pm, information was received that one Kelvin Izekor of No. 50 Upper Mission extension, Benin-City has killed his wife named Success Izekor, aged 38 years, and was about to be lynched by a mob.
“It took serious efforts by the police operatives to pacify the mob, rescue, and take the suspect into custody for investigation. The victim was removed and rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.”
Yamu said the state Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, decried the recent cases of spouses being violent against each other while assuring the public of diligent investigation into the death of the woman. He noted that whoever was found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.
