London Police sack Nigerian-born Arsenal fan for hooliganism

A Metropolitan Police officer has been dismissed without notice and issued a three-year football banning order over repeated incidents of football-related disorder.

Detective Constable Gordon Irikefe, an Arsenal supporter attached to the Central South Command Unit, was sacked following a misconduct hearing last week over his behaviour at a Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal match.

The officer also appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 24 February, in relation to offences committed at Arsenal matches between October 2022 and April 2024.

Detective Superintendent Emma Bond, who oversees policing in the Central South area, condemned Irikefe’s actions, stating that he had demonstrated an unacceptable pattern of behaviour at football matches, which was disgraceful for anyone, let alone a police officer expected to uphold the highest standards both on and off duty.

She said his actions had not only resulted in a football banning order but had also cost him his job, adding that she appreciated the efforts of the professional standards and football unit in compiling the necessary evidence to ensure decisive action was taken.

According to Met Police, the misconduct hearing, held on Thursday, 20 February, examined allegations that on 17 April 2024, while off duty, Irikefe ignited and threw a pyrotechnic into the crowd during Arsenal’s match in Munich.

German police arrested him the same day for wearing a full balaclava and sunglasses inside the stadium, fining him €100 for the offence.

The hearing ruled that his actions constituted gross misconduct for discreditable conduct and breached professional behaviour standards.

Although he resigned on 12 February, his notice period meant he was still a serving officer when the hearing took place, leading to his immediate dismissal.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told that since October 2022, Irikefe had repeatedly been flagged for disorderly and anti-social behaviour at football matches, leading to disciplinary action and management intervention.

The court heard that in February 2023, he was caught engaging in “tragedy chanting” at a Leicester City match, shouting “helicopter” in reference to the 2018 helicopter crash that killed the club’s chairman.

Other offences included making lewd gestures, abusing substitute players, concealing his identity with a balaclava, intimidating other fans, and using pyrotechnics.

The court granted a three-year banning order, preventing Irikefe from attending any regulated football matches in the UK.

The order also requires him to surrender his passport upon request when matches are played abroad. He is prohibited from going within one mile of the Emirates Stadium if Arsenal are playing four hours before and after the match and cannot visit any town, city, or London borough where Arsenal is playing an away game during the same period.

He is also barred from going within two miles of any stadium where the England national team is playing four hours before and after a match.

Following his dismissal, Irikefe will be placed on the College of Policing’s barred list, preventing him from working in any policing role, including for local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
