It has been revealed that Ajax was surprised that Manchester United could pay €57m plus add ons to acquire the services of their 1.75m central defender, Lisandro Martinez.
Then the Dutch side felt ‘it would be totally irresponsible’ not to accept the ‘gigantic’ offer from the English top flight side.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag succeeded in recruiting his former player Martinez from Ajax.
But just as many football pundits had predicted, the centre-back has had a tough start to life in the Premier League basically due to his height and stamina.
And Dutch outlet De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, said that Ajax themselves were shocked by the offer by Manchester United.
“When a €50m offer was placed for Martinez, Ajax asked themselves: ‘when will another club be placing such a high bid for a 1.75m centre-back? Only a Premier League club would be willing to do that,” he told talkSPORT.
“And then the €57m/€67m offer came in, they believed it was totally irresponsible not to accept it. Within Ajax they were completely surprised that such a gigantic offer was placed.”
