FCCPC summons Air Peace over ticket refunds

By Olaitan Ibrahim

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned the management of Air Peace Limited over numerous consumer complaints regarding the non-refund of ticket fares, even when the airline cancels its flights.

According to the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, these actions potentially contravene the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

The FCCPC stated that the alleged conduct of Air Peace violates Sections 130(1)(a) and (b), and 130(2)(b) of the FCCPA, which guarantee consumers the right to timely refunds when advance bookings or orders are unfulfilled due to the service provider’s failure. The commission emphasized that this provision ensures fair dealing and protects consumers from unfair practices.

The FCCPC issued a formal summons, dated June 13, 2025, requiring Air Peace to appear before the commission on June 23, 2025. The airline was directed to produce documentary evidence, including:

Complaint log for refunds: Records of complaints and refunds over the past 12 months
– Total records of processed refunds: Details of all refunds processed to date
– List of cancelled flights: Records of all cancelled flights on all routes within the past 12 months.

– Remedial actions: Measures taken to mitigate consumer hardship resulting from cancelled flights

The FCCPC had previously commenced inquiries into allegations of exploitative ticket pricing by Air Peace in December 2024. However, this current summons appears to be a separate matter.
