The Federal Government has announced the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge (Ahmadu Bello Way-Marina bound) to vehicular traffic, reversing its earlier decision to keep it closed for over a month.
Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, made the announcement in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha.
The Independence Bridge, which was initially shut down on April 1 for critical maintenance and rehabilitation, was expected to remain closed until May.
However, Umahi revealed that major repair works would now be scheduled for a later date.
He assured commuters that palliative measures were already underway to ensure the bridge remained motorable.
Regretting the inconvenience caused by the abrupt closure, Umahi appealed to motorists for understanding and cooperation.
