Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has announced a full scholarship for all female indigenes of the state who scored 250 and above in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This is part of his administration’s effort to promote girl-child education and women’s participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Zulum made the announcement on Saturday in Maiduguri at the inauguration of the new executive members of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Maiduguri Chapter.

The event also featured a scholarship programme championed by his wife, Dr. Habiba Babagana Zulum.

“In order to encourage girl-child education in the state, I want to announce that all female indigenes who scored 250 and above in JAMB will be fully sponsored by the Borno State Government to study STEM or technical and vocational education,” the governor declared.

He directed the acting Chief of Staff, the State Scholarship Board, the Ministry of Education, and APWEN to begin identifying and screening eligible candidates for the programme.

Governor Zulum commended his wife’s contributions to the promotion of education and applauded APWEN’s consistent efforts to inspire and support girls and women in engineering.

Delivering a keynote address titled “The Role of Mentorship in Encouraging Girls to Pursue Engineering Careers in Nigeria”, Zulum emphasised the transformative power of mentorship in personal and professional development.

She lamented that women account for only 14% of Nigeria’s STEM workforce and called for concerted efforts to improve this figure.

“Mentorship is critical to shaping the minds and future of upcoming generations. It helps build confidence, challenge stereotypes, foster critical thinking, and open doors to opportunities,” she said.

Outgoing APWEN Chairperson, Kori Shettima, expressed pride in the association’s progress, particularly in the areas of advocacy and mentoring girls in STEM disciplines.

“I am proud of the progress we have made, the lives we have touched, and the young minds we have inspired,” she said.

The event also marked the inauguration of Engr. Hajju Tijjani Gazali as the 4th Chairperson of APWEN, Maiduguri Chapter.

In addition, scholarships were awarded to top-performing female students — N200,000 each to six outstanding pupils of Wulari Primary School and N300,000 each to six best science students of the Federal Government Girls College, Monguno.
