I’m still in PDP, working on alliances to defeat Tinubu in 2027 – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports suggesting he is set to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirming his commitment to the party and his push for a formidable opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released by his media office, Atiku categorically denied any plans to abandon the PDP, describing the claims as “false and baseless.”

The statement read: “We have observed that some news platforms are peddling unverified information that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party. We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic.”

Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been vocal about the need for opposition parties to unite in a bid to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

His media team reiterated this stance, noting that his current focus is on forming a grand coalition of opposition forces rather than defecting to another political platform.

“Recall that Atiku Abubakar had persistently called for a coalition of opposition political parties in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election with the aim of ousting the incompetent and pain-inflicting All Progressives Congress, in order to give Nigerians a new lease of life,” the statement added.

The former vice president’s camp dismissed speculation about his political allegiance, stating that any claims of his defection run counter to his ongoing efforts to unify opposition parties under a common goal.

“It is fallacious and unfounded to allege that the Waziri is jumping PDP ship. Such an allegation is antithetical to the objective of the grand coalition, which the former Vice President is currently driving alongside other prominent political leaders in the country,” the statement said.

“We, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that Atiku remains a principal bonafide member of the PDP, the main opposition party. Any insinuation to the contrary is contrived to confuse Nigerians about the magnitude of the grand coalition that is at work to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the APC,” the statement concluded.
