Five states, namely Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Ekiti, will battle for the ticket to the national finals of the Nigeria Cricket Federation and Association of Nigeria Women in Sports women’s cricket championship, when the zonal elimination begins on Thursday April 18 in Lagos, in a latest report.
The regional matches will be played at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval and will run till Monday April 22 as the winners will represent the zone at the national finals at a later date that would be announced by the federation.
Representative of the southwest zone on the NCF board, Tayo Atoloye, said the championship would afford the zone the opportunity to promote the women’s game.
“The National Women’s Championship was organised to provide a platform for female cricketers from the southwest region of Nigeria and the country at large to showcase their talents and compete at the national level,” Atoloye said.
“For us in the southwest, we are also inspired by the desire to promote women’s cricket, identify promising players and foster the growth of the sport in the region.”
The tournament is open to female players of all ages and skill levels within the region and each state is expected to parade a 14-member team from various clubs and schools, to represent the state at the regional event.
Prizes for the tournament include trophies and other awards for the top-performing teams and individual players.
