The three-time African champions, Super Eagles, have already sealed the top spot in the Group L of the 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, but they still have one game to go
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are back in Lagos following their win over the Benin Republic in a Group L Afcon qualifier clash at the Charles de Gaulle Stadium.
A Paul Onuachu header deep into stoppage time helped Gernot Rohr’s men to a 1-0 victory over their West African neighbours.
Nigeria had already secured qualification before the match, but the win means they are now guaranteed to finish in the top spot.
Nonetheless, they still have one game left, the clash against Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Tuesday.
Lesotho delegation flies into Nigeria on Monday for Tuesday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The match commissioner and referees arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, while the security officer and referees’ assessor have been in Lagos since Saturday.
Lesotho held Sierra Leone to a scoreless draw in Maseru on Saturday but are no longer in the running for a ticket to Cameroon 2021.
They will have their official training at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Monday evening by 5 pm.
However, Super Eagles supporters still appear unconvinced by the national side despite qualifying for the Nations Cup with two games to spare
The reaction was muted on social media platforms and forums in the aftermath of the victory and that’s even without considering some of the eyebrows that were raised by the NFF’s decision to send the team to Porto-Novo on a flotilla of speedboats.
Twitter user @Harbiodinho described Nigeria as ‘unimpressive’, others argued that—having travelled to Benin by boat, they should be made to swim back to Lagos.
“We have so many improvements to make,” complained @ozo_chukwu, while @Dope_Kylee expressed the belief that he was wasting his data to watch the Super Eagles in action.
Throughout the contest, there were complaints about Nigeria being boring, about the contest being unwatchable, about the visitors lacking a cohesive plan, lacking structure, and failing to make the most of their talented options.
