Maguire header stamps out Liverpool, as Man. United secure shock win at Anfield

By Olaitan Ibrahim

Manchester United dazed Anfield with a dramatic 2–1 victory over Liverpool, as Harry Maguire’s late header sealed their first win at the famous ground in almost ten years.

It was Bryan Mbeumo who drew first blood for United in just the 2nd minute, finishing coolly from Amad Diallo’s quick pass to silence the home crowd. United’s early control forced Liverpool to chase the game, with several near misses in the first half.

Liverpool found their equaliser in the 78th minute, when Cody Gakpo bundled home from close range after Federico Chiesa’s low cross ricocheted off a defender.

But that hope was short-lived. In the 84th minute, United captain Bruno Fernandes floated in a precise delivery from a corner that found Maguire, who powered a header into the bottom corner beyond goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock added on BBC Radio 5 Live: “You can’t leave Maguire free like that. It’s a textbook header, down, powerful, and unstoppable.”

Liverpool threw everything forward in the final minutes, but Gakpo missed a golden chance to level again, heading wide from Jeremie Frimpong’s cross.

The result ends Liverpool’s three-game losing streak in all competitions, but extends their frustration against United at Anfield.
