Manchester City’s difficult run of form continued on Saturday as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton in a Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium.
This is the third consecutive defeat City had suffered in less a week. They suffered 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth and a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Sporting CB in a Champions League match.
The match kicked off with City having the better of the early chances. In the 15th minute, Savinho found himself in space inside the box after a neat pass but saw his effort towards the bottom right corner expertly saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
However, it was City who broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Erling Haaland picked up a ball inside the box, found himself in a good position, and fired in a shot that deflected past Verbruggen, giving City a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later, Haaland had another opportunity to extend City’s advantage. He was picked out with a precise pass and, with time on his side, aimed for the bottom right corner. But Verbruggen was on hand once again to deny the Norwegian striker with a fine save.
Brighton came out strong in the second half and had their first real chance in the 52nd minute. Jack Hinshelwood’s header from a cross looked destined for the back of the net, but City’s goalkeeper Ederson produced a superb save to keep his side ahead.
However, Brighton’s pressure eventually paid off in the 78th minute when Joao Pedro was in the right place at the right time to pounce on a rebound inside the box. He made no mistake, rifling the ball into the left side of the net to equalise at 1-1.
The game turned in Brighton’s favour in the 83rd minute when Matt O’Riley latched onto a precise pass into the box. With plenty of space, he calmly slotted home a low strike past Ederson to give the Seagulls a 2-1 lead.
Despite late pressure from City, Brighton held firm to secure a vital three points, leaving Manchester City to reflect on their continuing struggles in the Premier League.
