Man petitions Lagos CP over detention of minor sons

By Olaitan Ibrahim

Femi Afuwape, a resident of Lagos state, has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, alleging that his two minor sons, aged 10 and 5, were wrongfully arrested and detained for three days by police officers attached to the Oke-Odo police division.

According to the petition dated May 6, 2025, the incident occurred at No. 6 Adeaga Street, Abule Egba, in Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA.

Afuwape via his petition claimed that a co-tenant, Mr. Odun, accused his children of entering his room, leading to their arrest and detention.

He further alleged that despite repeated attempts, the children were not released by police due to instructions from Mr. Odun.

Afuwape also expressed deep concern over the treatment of his children, stating that their detention resulted in their absence from school for several days.

He urged the Commissioner of Police to intervene and ensure justice is served.

However, when contacted, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos Police Command, refuted the claims of detention.

Hundeyin explained that the children were accused of stealing money and confirmed that they handed the money over to their father.

He stated that the children were not detained but rather released pending further investigation, given their minor status.

The Lagos police media officer said: “They were not detained. They were accused of stealing money. The children confirmed that they handed the money over to their dad. For the fact that they are minors, they were released pending when their father would be seen.”
