The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Godwin Obaseki, who got the highest votes in the Edo State governorship election has been declared the winner of the election.
Governor Obaseki won his first election in 2016 as a candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), being supported by the immediate past Governor and formal Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomole. His main opponent then was Mr Ize-Iyamu who was a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
After Governor Obaseki was disqualified by APC, he then moved to become a candidate of the PDP to actualize his second election as the governor of Edo State. His eventual opponent in last Saturday’s election, Ize-Iyamu, crossed carpets to become a member of the APC.
The result of the election held in all 18 local government areas of Edo State was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday in Benin.
The chairman of the APC Media Campaign Council, John Mayaki announced that the party has rejected the result, claiming that the party’s supporters were arrested arbitrarily, with many of the results declared fabricated.
Governor Obaseki won in 13 of the 18 local government areas in the state and scored more than 25 percent of votes cast in two-thirds of the local government in the state.
