Rivers Angels FC has won in the battle to become champion of the Nigeria Women Football Club, which confer on them the chance to represent the country in the WAFU Zone B playoff for the CAF’s Women Championship league.
Rivers Angels have been competing against three football clubs, Delta Queens, FC Robo, and Sunshine Queens before thrashing Sunshine Queens 4-0, bringing their trophy haul to seven.
The final championship of the NWFL was held Sunday 25th April at Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.
The NWFL final championship gave fans happiness because it was thrilling to the end as Rivers Angels finished in the top six in the 2020-2021 campaign.
Before Sunday’s game, Edwin Okonis team had played four matches, amassing eight points. Their opponents had also gotten seven points from the same amount of matches
Rivers Angels only needed a win to retain the crown going into Sunday’s game.
However, a goal each from Oghenebrume Ikhekua, Vivian Ikechuchwu, Alice Ogebe, and Maryann Ezeanagu, handed Rivers Angels the title after gamering eleven points.
The icing on the victory came in the 79th minute through diminutive forward, Maryann Ezeanagu, who made it 4-0 to confirm Rivers Angels’ seventh league title and their enviable status as the undisputed champions of women’s club soccer in Nigeria.
Today’s victory was the club’s first consecutive league win. They won the league in 1994, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019
The victory gives them a ticket to the WAFU-B zonal competition billed for May 2021 from where they will fight for a place in the maiden CAF Women’s Champions League.
Sports Minister, Sunday Dare; NFF President, Amaju Pinnick,; FF First Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi; Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; Edo State Deputy Governor, Phillip Shuaibu; NFF Board Members, Ahmed Fresh, Sheriff Rabiu Inuwa were among the dignitaries who graced Sunday’s grand finale.
