Former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid a moving tribute to the late President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, during a service of songs held in Abuja.
Jonathan fondly recalled how Iwuanyanwu mentored him long before his political rise, starting from his time as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State through his presidency.
“He treated me like a son and showed immense goodwill throughout my political journey,” Jonathan stated, receiving a standing ovation from the congregation.
Iwuanyanwu, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had unsuccessfully contested the presidency three times.
Despite his political losses, he remained a steadfast supporter of Jonathan, even organising private prayer sessions during challenging moments of his presidency.
Jonathan urged Nigerians and politicians to follow Iwuanyanwu’s example by doing good and leaving a positive mark on society.
“We are not here to mourn but to celebrate the life of our father, who lived well and served his community and nation,” he said.
Former Imo State Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, also eulogized Iwuanyanwu, describing him as a great leader and mentor to many politicians. “He was exemplary, touched numerous lives, and left an enduring legacy,” Udenwa added.
The service, held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, was attended by prominent Nigerians, including former Senate President Adolphus Wabara and the Deputy Governor of Imo State.
Chief Iwuanyanwu, a civil engineer and successful entrepreneur, founded Champion Newspapers, Iwuanyanwu National Football Club, and chaired Oriental Airlines and Oriental Shipping Lines. He was also conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
Iwuanyanwu passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 81, leaving behind his second wife, Frances, and seven children.
