When lemon becomes lemonade: THE Chidinma Adetshina Story

By Olaitan Ibrahim

Chidimma Adetshina was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria after overcoming backlash regarding her nationality in South Africa.

“I want to dedicate this crown to God Almighty, who has been my strength through every trial and triumph,” she wrote on Instagram.

Adetshina will represent Nigeria at the international Miss Universe competition in November.

“Standing here as Miss Universe Nigeria is a dream come true, and I am deeply honoured and humbled to wear this crown tonight,” reflected Chidimma Adetshina after being crowned on Saturday.

Born to a Nigerian father in South Africa, the 23-year-old withdrew from the Miss SA pageant in August due to backlash about her nationality. Additionally, questions were raised about her mother’s nationality, who was initially reported to be South African of Mozambican descent.

However, the Department of Home Affairs said it found evidence suggesting that the person it had on record as Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft.

After the furore, Miss Universe Nigeria invited the beauty queen to participate in its upcoming pageant.

Adetshina was the 25th contestant representing Taraba State in north-eastern Nigeria.

“I want to dedicate this crown to God Almighty, who has been my strength through every trial and triumph. Without His grace, I wouldn’t be standing here today. I am forever grateful,” she wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday.

She continued: “As I accept this honour, I want to share a vision that burns deeply within me, a vision of African unity and peaceful coexistence! Let’s break down the barriers that divide us.

Let’s foster a continent where every African can move freely without prejudice, pursue their dreams, and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our great continent. This crown is not just a symbol of beauty; it is a call to action.

Adetshina gave special thanks to her family, who “stood by me through every challenge, every tear, and every victory; this is for you. Your love and support have been my foundation” She also thanked her friends, fans, and the Silverbird Group, the pageant organiser, for inviting her to participate.

“Thank you all for your support and belief in me. I am excited for the journey ahead and for the opportunity to serve as Miss Universe Nigeria,” she wrote.
